Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM) is a technique used by physical therapists and other clinicians to address soft tissue restrictions, muscle tension, and scar tissue. In IASTM, specialized handheld tools (often metal or hard plastic) are used to apply targeted pressure to soft tissue areas like muscles, tendons, and fascia. The goal is to improve tissue mobility, reduce pain, and enhance function by breaking up adhesions and scar tissue and promoting blood flow.
How IASTM Works:
- Tools and Technique: Tools of various shapes are chosen based on the area of the body and the type of tissue restriction. The therapist glides the tool over the skin to identify areas of tightness, using controlled pressure to mobilize soft tissues.
- Tissue Repair and Remodeling: By applying specific pressure, IASTM stimulates a healing response in the body, helping to break down scar tissue, realign muscle fibers, and restore natural movement patterns.
- Increased Circulation: The controlled pressure also increases local blood flow, bringing oxygen and nutrients to the tissues to promote healing.
Conditions Treated with IASTM:
IASTM is commonly used to treat various musculoskeletal issues, including:
- Tendonitis (e.g., tennis elbow, Achilles tendonitis)
- Muscle strains and tightness
- Ligament injuries
- Chronic pain and limited mobility from scar tissue or surgery
- Plantar fasciitis, shin splints, and other sports injuries
